NYC, LA, or DC: Which is the Top Food City in the U.S.?
Usually, it’s NY or LA that gets all the hype. DC is usually sidelined since it’s seen more as a political powerhouse. It’s the capital of the country, it’s where Trump lived four years, and it’s where protests are always happening. Nobody thinks “Washington DC” when they think about good food. They think museums and the White House and election campaigns.
But the data is in, folks: It’s Washington DC and not NY or LA that’s the food capital of the country.
And we’re not surprised at all.
The Diversity Speaks for Itself
As one of the most diverse places in the country, with scores of immigrants and foreign nationals residing here, Washington DC does stand out from the crowd. The food choices in DC are not restricted to one kind of food. The options in DC just don’t end.
You can get Indian, Middle Eastern, African, Mediterranean, Caribbean, continental, oriental, Cantonese—and all other varieties. There’s Turkish and Lebanese and Swedish all in one place.
What we’re saying is you can have haggis for breakfast, biryani for lunch, General Tso’s for dinner, and baklava for dessert.
The Dining Out Scene
It isn’t just the diversity that makes Washington DC the top food place in the country. It’s also the dining out scene, which is far better than what you’ll find in NY or LA. The city has 2,233 restaurants—and this isn’t counting all the small businesses nor the home-based eateries that people are operating.
It’s the Right Size
You would think it’s just the size of the steaks that matter, but the stakes here are of a different variety. New York, by comparison, is huge. Washington DC is only a fraction of NY’s humongous size. That gives DC the manageability of a town. The city offers you more opportunities to explore all that it has to offer because those options are spread over a smaller surface area. You can pan out almost all of DC’s restaurants in maybe a month.
Additionally, DC’s size means it’s easier to go out and eat. In places like LA and NY, you’d have to drive down or walk for quite some time before you can get to a desired eatery. In DC, that isn’t so.
High-Income Populace
As compared to NY or LA, DC has a population that has a higher income ratio, which means they find it easier to be able to spend on good food and good dining. This encourages experimental chefs and other smalltime food business operators to open up their ventures with the confidence that they won’t go bankrupt. As a result, DC has a greater variety of food options to offer you.
